New Delhi (India's
capital), built on the site of seven historic cities,
consists of the 17th century Old
Delhi and 20th century
New Delhi,
created by the British when they transferred the capital from
Calcutta
in 1911. A truly fascinating blend of the old and the new with ancient
monuments and beautiful gardens, tree-lined avenues, splendid government
buildings and bustling bazaars.
Mumbai
(formerly Bombay), the most cosmopolitan
of all Indian cities, is a vital and pulsating city with a tradition of cultures from many
lands. The city also contains some really magnificent Victorian
and
Gothic architecture, museums, markets, gleaming skyscrapers,
and the highest cost of living in India as well as the
largest of India's city slums made famous by the film "Slumdog
Millionaire".
Chennai
(formerly Madras), the earliest British
settlement of the East
India Company,
is an elegant colonial port with some of the finest
examples of the 19th century Indo-Saracenic architecture, a long beach
with palm trees. Nearby is the
golden "City of a Thousand Temples" at
Kanchipuram,
noted also for fine silks, the 7th Century Shore Temples
and rock carvings of Mahabalipuram
.
The
other Gateways to be considered are :
Bengaluru
(Bangalore), Kochi
(Cochin), Thiruvananthapuram
(Trivandrum),
Hyderabad & Kolkata
(Calcutta)

there are the
gardens and lakes of Kashmir, the desert kingdom of Ladakh, the rhododendron

Sikkim and the hill stations with meadows of wild
flowers and forests of pine.
Sikkim
is a remote and beautiful Himalayan
state of majestic mountains, ancient Buddhist
monasteries, orchids and rhododendrons.
Far
in the North of India on an ancient Silk
Route to China,
lies the Himalayan
state of Ladakh.
Take a tour of the Himalayan Foothills, staying
in former summer residences of the Maharajas
and the British Raj
with walks and fishing for Trout

To the South, the Deccan plateau rises to a lesser known India, a land of temples and ancient empires little influenced by foreign invaders, beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and paddy fields.
The sandalwood city of
Mysore, the spice centre of Cochin, the waterways of
Kerala and the colourful temple towns of
Tamil Nadu depict a rich cultural heritage.
A lush tropical land, palm trees
and paddy fields, plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom, quiet backwaters,
beautiful beaches, temples vibrant with colour and life, this is a journey to an
exotic and lesser known India.
In India there are many wildlife sanctuaries and parks where more than 350
species of mammals and 1,244 species of birds can be observed in their natural
habitat. The
diversity of India's climate and topography has resulted in a rich flora
and fauna. Recently, conservation measures have been adopted to
preserve the wonderful heritage of India's fauna.
In the foothills of the
Himalaya
lies Corbett National
Park,
the oldest wildlife reserve. Noted for tiger, elephant, leopard, and marsh
crocodile, Corbett
boasts of 580 species of birds.
The saving from near extinction of the Indian one horned rhinoceros,
the wild buffalo
and the barasinga
(swamp deer)
at Kaziranga National Park
in Assam is
one of Asia's great conservation successes, with a wonderful bird life. Viewing by
elephant, jeep and from watch towers.
"Bandhavgarh,
in Central India is considered by many as the finest of all sanctuaries
in India and is the home of many rare and endangered species. Kanha, the
heart of the land romanticised by Kipling in his Jungle Books, there is
a good chance of observing tiger, leopard, gaur, sloth bear, blackbuck
and the barasingha"
