Pondicherry embodies
emerald green waters, tall, swaying palms, the sky mirroring varied
hues, and diverse cultures entwining to form a beautiful union. The
essence of Pondi is a blend of spiritual aura, French colonial heritage,
Tamil culture and a cosmopolitan flair of many nationalities.
The Promenade, a
Sarovar Premier Hotel, designed by Pondy's own architect and renowned
ceramist Ray Meeker, is a luxury boutique hotel, aptly named, as it
overlooks the Bay of Bengal. It lies along the beautiful Boulevard, and
is situated beside the old lighthouse and opposite the Gandhi statue, in
the most prominent location of Pondicherry.
This luxurious 5 Star
property has 26 Deluxe, 8 Sea Facing and 1 Suite. The Promenade is
elegantly designed. While the neoclassical façade blends in with the
surrounding French architecture, the interiors are sleek and modern.
The spaces are airy, the décor, simple and sophisticated. A liberal use
of teak and the stone floors add to the warmth, and there's natural
leather on the chairs, above the head rest, and put to clever use in the
lift by Bangalore-based designer Ram Sinan.
Most of the rooms
overlook the shimmering waters of the Bay of Bengal.
Stylishly designed rooms with wooden flooring, specially designed luxury
bedding, LCD TV, work desk, Wi-Fi, tea/coffee maker, fully loaded mini
bar & electronic safe, DVD player and movies available upon request.
All rooms are accented with exquisitely crafted pure leather accessories
& an inspiring leather head board.
All bathrooms come with a hand dryer, bath tub, magnifying mirror and
international 'Bodyshop' toiletries.
In addition, international direct dialing, 24 -hrs In-Room dining option,
Board Games on request, Reflexology & Spa Massages (In Room), 24
hour laundry service, Doctor on call.
The Promenade has two
restaurants and a bar.
The The Blue Line 24
hour restaurant, overlooking the sea, serves authentic Oriental,
Mediterranean cuisines. The lavish buffets at Breakfast, Lunch and
Dinner, provide an extensive a la carte menu incorporating a wide range
of world cuisine.
In the evenings the restaurant will have a mixed Asian menu with a
Chinese bias, and the staff will be happy if you stop to appreciate the
style their buffet is served in. Those mandatory little stoves have been
done away with. The inducts (stone tiles that do all the heating without
a flame) imported from Switzerland and "absolutely the latest and
very expensive," are, as the manager says, impressive.
But what's
potentially awesome is the rooftop restaurant, Lighthouse. With a blue
mosaic floor, the sky overhead, the sea in front and just the old
lighthouse looming on one side, it creates a Mediterranean ambience
straight out of some romantic novel. Difficult to replicate unless you
have a more than hundred-year-old lighthouse right next door.
The barbeque and Grill rooftop restaurant offers stunning views of the
ocean and is towered over by the town's ancient (and now disused)
lighthouse. It specializes in grills and seafood and is open for dinner
only. It offers a spectacular view of the promenade, the sea front and
the Bay of Bengal.
Risque - A similar
lazy tropical atmosphere has been created on the ground floor courtyard
that overlooks a small sunken pool, by world famous landscape artist
Made Wijayan.
The lounge bar with easy leather seating and contemporary music, offers
an amazing range of exotic cocktails, international wines, draught beer,
mocktails and also an exclusive blend of coffees.
The town’s ancient
French quarter, with its colonial villas, leafy parks and attractive
cafes, are just a block away.
Pondicherry’s busy shopping district, a well-known centre for
handicrafts and fashion goods, is a mere ten minute walk away.
