Subsequent
to the controversy Pope Benedict 16th started last September after
a speech at the University of Regensburg, entitled Faith,
Reason and the University: Memories and Reflections.
Hani Nakchabandi,
an Iraqi writer wrote :
“Without a doubt, the Pope in the Vatican was wrong… but we, like him have been wrong, and more so than him.
How do most of the Muslim world’s theologians measure up to a generous Islam that preaches virtue and forbids wounding others, even with our words?
Why did they keep silent concerning our preaching about Christians and spring into action only when the Pope mentioned our Noble Prophet?
I have not heard a single word from a mufti or a sheikh to say that the insults and anathemas proffered against Christians are forbidden because they go against Islamic tolerance.
I have never heard an imam say that this behaviour is misguided, nor preach to our children and in our schools as his main theme that we must love our neighbour”.
